Class: More discussion of linking
strategies and tools. The
impact of linking on how page rank is distributed within a web site was
demonstrated using a web site with a page rank calculator on it. Results
were tabulated in the "linksfile"
that has been available on the site to provide reference to links used
in various classes throughout the course.
Reference was also made to the
availability of a "Directory of
Directories" on the Internet that can be used as a guide to places
to list your site to obtain high value inbound links.

Class: The importance of content on a web
site, a review of recent studies of company experiences.
Also, a new
listing of directories on the
web as a source of good links for your site.
During the class, mention was made of
three other sites that might be of interest to class members. The first
is a favorite software package of mine named
Roboform, that keeps track of
passwords and other information that might be used on forms and entry
pages around the web. the second is a site (Lynda.com)
offering training on a variety of software packages, interactively over
the Internet and on demand! Finally, a question arose about tracking
software and I described several packages that are "server-side" systems
that are basically packaged with the hosting arrangement that you
select, and I also referred to a tracking package that I use personally
named Hitslink.

Dick Myers & Guest Lecturer, Don Parsons |
Class: Content Management Systems (CMS)
and how to use them to develop your site (with illustration of Drupal
used in class). Don has
added more links to the supplemental notes since the first posting. The
file is updated as of 6:15 pm Thursday. The additions pertain to use of
RSS feeds on your web site.
Some of the discussion in class
appeared to be confusing to some participants. When Don referred to an
RSS Reader, that referred to a piece of software that can be used as a
freestanding program to read RSS feeds, or can be used as a plug-in to a
browser for the same purpose. The question of how to install an RSS feed
that is incorporated as an element of your web site was not covered in
great detail, and that was the reason for modifying the supplemental
file. We will plan a followup class on the topic for those who are
interested.
