Your broadband internet connection is a big
improvement over dial-up access, but it may not be performing as
well as it could. An on-line service is available, free of charge,
that will allow you to test your connection to see how it is
performing, and will recommend steps you can take to improve the
performance if you are not getting all you should.
This site will help you improve any
connection, from dial-up, to cable modem, to dsl. My personal
experience with the site convinces me that it can help you.

I recently switched my internet access from
dsl to cable modem, and was interested in how the change was
performing. My experience has been that, at its best, my
connection is much faster, but it also drops dramatically at
different times of the day. When I checked the speed on September
29 and saw "636/136 kbps", I was horrified. Dropping from the
maximum is one thing, but this speed is intolerable!
The test is available at a site named "Broadband
Reports.com" under the selection "Our Tools". After testing
your connection, you have the option of saving the information to
a "Test History", which creates the record I have shown above. By
selecting "Tweaks", you can run another analytical tool that will
recommend changes to your computer connection settings to improve
your speed.
In my case, the tool recommended that I
increase the packet size that my system accepted from the
internet, and provided a range of numbers that I should consider.
I increased the setting, ran the test again, and improved my speed
to "1422/292 kbps". I increased the setting again, and achieved
"2038/309 kbps". This is over a 300% increase in download speed,
and 270% in upload, just by changing some settings!
As you can see from my log, the changes took
place over a 35 minute period in the evening, during a prime usage
time. The length of time required to complete the process is due
to having to reboot the computer after each setting change. The broadband connection tool now has no additional
recommendations for improving my connection.
