Internet Marketing Class Notes

August 2004

The following is a collection of notes that I made for myself during the class.  They are provided in the event they may be useful to other attendees. Copies of presentations made in class are available on the "Past Clinic Topics" page at the end of each class description. Current information of interest will be added to my Internet Marketing blog.

The class was primarily a seminar on using site statistics to improve page rankings. Several other points were made in passing:
  • Google has modified its algorithm recently to place more emphasis on "freshness" and less on inbound links.
  • Yahoo & MSN are using the same spider at the moment.
  • A handy tool is available for finding common misspellings that you can use to increase your site visibility.
  • Another useful tool will let you find where your site ranks in Google on specified keyword phrases. This tool helps you avoid the process of searching through pages of results to find your page.
  • Still the essential tool for finding the right keywords to use on your site to maximize traffic is Wordtracker.

We reviewed briefly a presentation on "Starting an E-Business" to communicate some of the principles of getting started with a web site.

Several participants asked to have access to the spreadsheet of useful links that we referred to in the class.

8/4/2004 With a number of new participants in the class, some time was spent on reviewing the concept of the classes, the offering of a database development class coming up in October, location of the schedule & notes pages, registering for the class roster in order to be able to receive e-mail about changes, etc.

After that, a presentation on developing a web site from scratch was given, with several diversions to discuss keyword research, the difference between search engines and directories, how search engines rank sites, Google AdSense and AdWords, getting a listing in the Yahoo directory, evaluating site load time, and various other subjects.
