Want to make your movement around your computer directory structure easier? You can utilize shortcuts that take you directly to the directories that you use most.
A shortcut is simply a "re-director" that you can create and copy as much as you want to place it in different locations. You can tell the difference between a shortcut and a live program icon by the little box with an arrow in it in the lower left corner.
To create a shortcut, first open Explorer and navigate to the item you want to create the shortcut to. This can be a folder you use often, or a program. Highlight the item and "Copy" it, either with a "right click" and select "Copy", or use "Control C". This captures the item to your "clipboard".
Next, navigate to where you want to place the shortcut. This might be a directory that one of your programs opens in automatically. Another convenient place is the "Desktop". The Desktop is the view that you see when you first start up your computer, with the "Start" button in the lower left corner. Select the location, then "right-click" and choose "Paste shortcut".
I name my shortcuts beginning with "_" so that they will
sort out to the top of an alphabetic listing of the directory, where
they are easy to find.
I find it handy to create a folder where I store lots of shortcuts. I then put a shortcut to that folder on my desktop. Opening that folder gives me a direct route to any of the locations I have set up on
shortcuts.
In the example shown above, all the links (except one) are to my folder locations on another computer. The shortcut to the "Navigation" folder is on the desktop of my laptop. This saves me a lot of time when I am working on my laptop and need to get to files that are stored on my main computer at home.
