Set up an e-mail announcing your change of address and send it to all
the contacts in your address book (your decision about the ex-wife!).
Then set up an auto-response message in your e-mail client software
repeating the announcement of the change and set it to respond to all
e-mail. Next, review any subscriptions to newsletters that you may
have that are being sent to your email address. You will have to step
through each of these individually and follow the instructions to
either change the address where you receive the newsletter, or
"Unsubscribe" from your old address and re-subscribe from your new
one.
Third, consider any websites or other services where you may have
used your e-mail address as a login name or identifier. What you do
about these will depend upon the protocol of each. You can, in many
cases. continue to use an old address as an identifier, but this sets
up a confusing situation, and my distinct preference is to get these
changed over to the new address, as well.
Finally, determine how long you want to keep your old address
active to catch anything that you may have overlooked before
terminating your service there. You should begin using your new
address as your primary address immediately, but continue to monitor
both during this interim period. I would recommend a month at minimum,
but this very much depends upon your comfort level with the
possibility of missing communication. When you see that your incoming
mail to the old address has dropped to the point of nothing but the
usual junk mail coming in, you can feel free to terminate the service. |
